Xiangjia Dam – Shanghai ± 800 kV HVDC demonstration project was put into operation on July 8th, which is the first HVDC Transmission Project with highest voltage section, farthest transmission distance and maximum transmission capacity in the world. After the project is put into production, it will add 35 billion kwh of hydropower in Shanghai. Thus, more than half of electricity consumption in Shanghai will come from clean energy, which means that 16 million tons of coal can be saved every year and more than 26 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced. Therefore, Shanghai becomes the world’s largest “green power city.”
Known as the up line of “Green Energy Corridor”, it was established by State Grid Corporation in December 2008, which started from Fulong converter station in Yibin County, Sichuan Province, and ended in Shanghai Fengxian converter station, with a whole line of 1907 kilometers. The whole way crosses through eight provinces, and crosses the Yangtze River 4 times. The project first developed and applied the 6-inch thyristors in the world, whose rated current is 4,000 ampere, and maximum continuous transmission capacity reaches 7,200 MW. Its operation symbolizes that China has established the HVDC transmission standards system, and it has been fully used in construction.
