Shanghai is China’s shopping paradise with a long history. A hundred years ago, Ten-mile Foreign Fields (Shi Li Yang Chang) was already world-famous. At the beginning of Reform and Opening up, Shanghai-made products were well-known for its fashionable styles and exquisite craftsman, which were popular with and pursued by people around China. Since then, “Shanghai-made” has been a guarantee of good quality and sales. And now, there are a variety of famous commodities from the world in Shanghai, which leads the trend of the times to be the cutting-edge of China’s fashion and popularity.

Shopping in Shanghai, subway is the most convenient and efficient transportation tool. There are many famous shopping areas along the subway routes such as the bustling area of Huaihua Road which lies in the South Shaanxi Road station of Line 1, the shopping mall beside Xujiahui subway, as well as Naijing Road which is connected by Nanjing East Road Station, Nanjing West Road Station, Jing’an Temple Station along the Line 2. On season-shift, festival or business anniversary, it’s a good time for shopping because the major shopping malls promote amazing discounts.

I. Urban Shopping District

Xujiahui is located in the junction of Huashan Road, Hongqiao Road, North Cao Xi Road, Hengshan Road and Zhaojiabang Road. There are the four famous shopping malls which are known as “Four Diamonds”: the East Shopping Center, the Hong Kong Exchange, the Pacific Department Store and the Meeting Golden Square. In addition, Buynow, the Pacific Computer Plaza, the Hisap Digital Plaza and Metro City are also located here.

Transportation: by bus 15, 42, 44, 50, 56, 72, 122, 733, 864, Xu Min line; or by subway Line 1.

People’s Square is east to the west sidewalk of Middle Tibet Road, west to the east sidewalk of North Huangpi Road, south to the north sidewalk of the East Yan An Road, and north to Shanghai Grand Theater and the public area along the People’s Road. As the main business center, there are already more than 10 large shopping malls settled in People’s Square. The famous shopping malls including Hong Kong Shoppes Street, Di America Shopping Center, Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, the First Department Stores, Raffles Plaza and so on.

Transportation: by subway Line 1 and Line 2; or by bus 18 and 46.

Super Brand Mall in the Huangpu River is located in the heart of the Lujiazui financial and trade center which is reputed as “Manhattan of the East”. Adjacent to the Oriental Pearl Tower and Jin Mao Tower, the Super Brand Mall is the largest shopping and entertainment center in Shanghai. On designing, the Super Brand Mall is engaged with a concept of new “Four Seasons” (different floors designed with the symbolic color of different seasons). From the second floor to the fifth floor, it’s designed as a “golden road” to provide modern services and facilities including shopping, dining, leisure and entertainment.

Zhongshan Park includes many shopping malls such as Long Dream Shopping Center, the Xinning Shopping Centers, Rose Square Commercial Street, Milan Fashion Plaza, Multimedia Life Plaza and Beethoven Plaza. The Dragon Dream Mall is the first urban Track-transport-hub business center in China, which comprises business, culture, tourism and business offices. There are department stores, food city, featured restaurants, bookstores and supermarkets, etc. Long-wang Food City is settled in the first and second basements of the Center, each of which opens a characteristic restaurant.

Transportation: by subway Line 1, 2, and 3 to Zhongshan Park Station.

Wujiaochang is being developed to be another “Xujiahui” in the northeast corner of Shanghai. Wanda Commercial City, Wal-Mart, the East Shopping Center, 100 Union Festival Walk, East Shanghai, and other modern commercial Broadwood Square are all settled here. In the Wanda Plaza, there are Wal-Mart, Printemps Department Store, the First Food Square, Wanda International Cinema, Xinhua Bookstore, Hele International Household Square, and Gold & Gems Shops and so on, where also specifically sets three leisure streets in the Square with neighborhood-style layout.

Transportation: by Airport Line 4; or by bus 942, 55, 842 and 828.

Pudong New Shanghai Commercial City in Zhang Yang Road is located in the central area of Pudong Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone, which is present Asia’s largest retail store. The Commercial City not only comprises the upscale shopping halls such as the 1st Yaohan, Zhong Rong International Business Center, and Xin Mei Twin Towers, but also includes Sanxin World’s Commercial Hall, Xinlian Square, Huacheng Food Town as well as the 3rd Pacific Digital Plaza.

Transport: by subway Line 2; or by bus 1, 82, 630, tunnels bus Line 3 and Line 4.

Sleepless City is located in Shanghai Railway Station area, which is a new commercial center in Shanghai. It includes the Ever-Bright City commercial hall, Famous Brands Shopping Center, Huan Long Department Store, Pacific Department Store, Zhabei Square, etc., engaging in a variety of industry fields, where the entertainment, dining facilities are also easily available. In addition, Subway Station Square is also a good shopping choice.

Transportation: by subway Line 1, Line 3, Line 4; or by bus.

Pudong International Airport Duty-Free Shops only open to departing passengers, so passengers who take international flights can shop in the duty-free shops. Duty-free shops gather in the international departure area near the gate, No. 15-20. Sunrise Duty Free Shop sells the world’s best-selling cigarettes, wine, perfumes and all kinds of cosmetics. Orient King Power Duty Free Shop is mainly engaged in bags, leather goods, watches, clothing and a variety of foods.

II. Commercial Streets

1. High-grade Block

Nanjing Road Commercial Street, known as “China Business First Street,” is Shanghai’s earliest business section. Before liberation, it was famous as the “Ten-mile Foreign Field (Shi Li Yang Chang).” Nanjing Road Commercial Street is east to the Bund, and west to Middle Tibet Road, with a length of 2.5 km. It comprises more than 100 China time-honored brand specialty shops and modern commercial buildings such as the No. 1 Department Store, Hualian, New World Department Store, and the First Food Store, the Old Kai-Fu, Bao Daxiang, Hendry, Wu Liang-tsai, and other century-old shops.

Transportation: by subway Line 1 and Line 2; or by bus 18 and 46.

Jing’an Temple and West Nanjing Road are the west extensions of Nanjing Road Commercial Street, which include both the commodities meeting the mass consumption, and luxury boutiques such as Hang Lung Plaza, Meilong Town Square, and Sogo and so on.

Transport: by subway Line 2; or by bus 20, 37, 76, 57.

Huaihai Road is Shanghai’s famous commercial street with numerous Shoppes. There are high-grade office buildings such as Hong Kong Plaza, Shanghai Square; the computer squares such as Buynow and cyber; the Pacific Department Store in Huaihai Plaza, Shanghai Times Square, Parkson, Printemps, Novel Building, Huating Isetan and other comprehensive commercial buildings.

Transport: by subway Line 1; or by bus 26, 104.

2. Civilian Avenue

North Sichuan Road is in Hongkou District, where the commodities are of high-grade and medium-low-cost-based, so it is known as “Civilian Commercial Street.” Dongbao department stores, Printemps and Hisap Digital Square are all gathered here. There are also a large number of middle-low brand stores.

Transport: by subway Line 3; or by bus 25 and 63.

South Shaanxi Road, connecting Nanjing Road and Huaihai Road, is a street full of uniqueness. The dazzling shops standing side by side are decorated in peculiar styles. Although each shop is not large, the advantage is that every household has its own unique commodities that other shops don’t sell, while the price is only a fraction of large department stores.

Transport: by subway Line 1; or by bus 146, 42, 926.

Changle Road is said to be a monster street, which is so named because that two sweaters are sold for only 39 yuan in the shops of the east street, while a T shirt is sold for 1000 yuan in the shops of the west street. The shops here are less intensive than those in South Shaanxi Road, whose decorations are also not so exquisite as those in Shaanxi Road, even the bosses there are not so pretty as those in Shaanxi Road. Above all, there are still some people who like to shop in Changle Road for good commodities which are seemingly rough at the first sight, but actually have their own specialties to attract people’s favor.

Transportation: by bus 26, 40 and 548.

Hong Kong Shoppes Street & Di America Shopping Center are located in prime locations in Shanghai People’s Square. Di America Shopping Center presents various dazzling commodities including trivial ornaments, strange shoes & bags, and clothes with lace beads, etc. In order to save pocket, it is recommended to find a friend good at bargain to go shopping with you. Hong Kong Shoppes Street is mainly engaged in a series of famous brand store selling a variety of clothing, cosmetics and small accessories and so on.

Transport: by subway Line 1 to People’s Square subway station.

3. Amoy Everland

7 Pu Road is east to North Henan Road, West to North Zhejiang Road, south to North Shanxi Road, which forms a “T”-shaped distribution with a length of 680 meters. If you go shopping in 7 Pu Road, you’d better select carefully to get those good commodities that other people haven’t found, and then bargain with the seller for the lowest price. On weekends’ evening, some merchants often hawk their goods after closing shops, while the price is as low as staggering.

Transportation: by bus 15, 14, 17, 66.

Dongtai Road Antique Street, located in Liuhe Road, Luwan District, and Dongtai intersection, is a worldly well-known old crafts street, known as Shanghai’s “Liulichang.” It is mainly engaged in porcelain, jade, bronze, wood, calligraphy and painting, four treasures, and other miscellaneous pieces. Each store is decorated in its own style with a unique feature.
